We have recently received information about a resource called Net Aware and the game Fortnite which we felt you would appreciate. Net Aware de-mystifies a number of apps and games, giving you a guide to the social media apps your child may be using. It is a good resource to allow you to stay up-to-date and keep your child safe in today’s digital world. The Net Aware app can be downloaded for free from the App Store or Google Play. It can also be accessed online at As you will probably be aware, Fortnite, is a game that is consuming a significant amount of some children’s time away from school. The information below gives you an overview of the purpose and some of the potential challenges of this game. Net Aware also gives more detailed information. On the surface, the game itself is not particularly inappropriate in terms of content or violence but the immersive nature of the game is potentially the biggest ‘danger’ as children are struggling to put the game down due to its addictive nature. Please also note that although the ‘recommended’ age is 12 years old, the majority of users and players are below this age. The other possible threat is that whilst the game is free to download, the ‘in-app’ purchases are a very big attraction to young gamers and again, although the cost of some of these ‘skins’ is relatively small, it is the desire to continually improve their character and weapons etc…that makes the ‘in-app’ feature dangerous. I hope you find the information contained in this email useful. Please get in touch if you have any questions, Gill Rodgers (DHT)
